Timing device use in Chess and Go board games
From Daniel Crabtree
In which game were timing devices first used, and was the use of timing in one of the games copied from it's use in the other game, or were they developed independently?
An interesting question that arose during a game of chess between myself and Maciej in CO431 at Victoria University of Wellington, sometime in mid October 2005.
It turns out that Maciej and I were correct in our guess that the clocks were first used in Chess and that they were copied by other games, specifically Go at some later time.
"Game clocks were first used extensively in tournament chess, and are often referred to as "chess clocks," but their use has since been adopted for tournament Scrabble, Shogi, Go, and nearly every competitive two-player board game."
